Dhammapada: Happiness: alternative translations

Ajahn Munindo:
While in the midst of those who hate, to dwell free from hating is happiness indeed.
While in the midst of those who are troubled, to dwell untroubled is happiness indeed.
While in the midst of those who are greedy, to dwell free from greed is happiness indeed.
We dwell happily, free from anxiety. Like radiant beings in celestial realms, we rejoice in delight.


Gil Fronsdal: 
Ah, so happily we live, without hate among those who hate. 
Among people who hate, we live without hate.
Ah, so happily we live, without misery among those in misery. 
Among people in misery, we live without misery.
Ah, so happily we live, without ambition among those with ambition. 
Among people who are ambitious, we live without ambition.
Ah, so happily we live, we who have no attachments. 
We shall feast on joy, as do the radiant gods.


Thanissaro Bhikkhu:
How very happily we live,
free from hostility
among those who are hostile.
Among hostile people,
free from hostility we dwell.
How very happily we live,
free from misery
among those who are miserable.
Among miserable people,
free from misery we dwell.
How very happily we live,
free from busyness
among those who are busy.
Among busy people,
free from busyness we dwell.
How very happily we live,
we who have nothing.
We will feed on rapture
like the Radiant gods.


Acharya Buddharakkhita:
Happy indeed we live, friendly amidst the hostile. Amidst hostile men we dwell free from hatred.
Happy indeed we live, friendly amidst the afflicted (by craving). Amidst afflicted men we dwell free from affliction.
Happy indeed we live, free from avarice amidst the avaricious. Amidst the avaricious men we dwell free from avarice.
Happy indeed we live, we who possess nothing. Feeders on joy we shall be, like the Radiant Gods.


Ānandajoti Bhikkhu:
Let us live truly happily, without hatred, amongst those who have hatred,
amongst humans who have hatred let us live without hatred.
Let us live truly happily, without sickness, amongst those who are sick, 
amongst humans who have sickness let us live without sickness. 
Let us live truly happily, without longing, amongst those who are longing, 
amongst humans who are longing let us live without longing.
We live truly happily enough having no possessions ourselves, 
we will feed on joy like the gods of Streaming Light. 


W.D.C. Wagiswara and K.J. Saunders, 1912: 
O joy! We live in bliss; amongst men of hate, hating none. Let us indeed dwell among them without hatred.
O joy! In bliss we dwell; healthy amongst the ailing. Let us indeed dwell amongst them in perfect health. 
Yea, in very bliss we dwell; free from care amidst the careworn. Let us indeed dwell amongst them without care.
In bliss we dwell, possessing nothing: let us dwell feeding upon joy, like the shining ones in their splendour.

A few things!

Sharon Salzberg has some thoughts about anxiety. If you use Facebook, check out the BCIMS page ! I post articles, pictures, and quotes there regularly (usually more than once a day but it varies a lot!). Topics are generally meditation related, with a slant towards social justice but covering the range from news about Therevadan monastics to everyday life practice.
